Diving into the world of modded Minecraft opens up endless possibilities. Today, we’re focusing on the Fabric mod loader, known for its lightweight nature and compatibility with the newest Minecraft updates. Let’s get started on how to install Minecraft mods on a Fabric server!
1. How to Install Fabric
First, you will need to install the Fabric Loader for Minecraft on your own computer. Everyone who is going to connect and play on the server will also need to do these steps.
- Download the Fabric installer from Fabric’s download page and open the file.
- The installer will open, looking like this:

- The default settings should be fine here — simply press the Install button
- If you need to, for the mods or modpacks you wish to use, you can change the version of Minecraft from this window
- After pressing install, a new game version and profile will appear in the Minecraft launcher. Press the Minecraft version menu in the lower left of the launcher, and select the newly created Fabric Loader option.

- Launch the game once in order to complete the Fabric installation.
2. How to Start a Fabric Minecraft Server
Campfire Hosting makes creating a Minecraft Fabric Server incredibly easy. From the Admin panel, simply click on “Add Server”. Then on the server creation page, just change the “Server type” to Fabric and press Create server. That’s it! A low cost Fabric Minecraft server that’s available on demand in just a few clicks.

3. How to Find and Download Minecraft Mods
Now its time to find some mods for your new Fabric Minecraft server! There are plenty of websites out there for this purpose, but two reliable and trusted websites are Modrinth and Curseforge. Most major mods are hosted on these two websites so you shouldn’t need much else.
One important thing to note is that when browsing for mods, make sure you are only looking at mods that are compatible for the game version you selected! Also select the Fabric option under Loaders.

With any mod you download you will want to double check that the file you selected is for the correct version of Minecraft you are using along with verifying that it is for the Fabric mod platform.

4. Installing Fabric Mods on a Minecraft Server
Now we can start installing Fabric mods. As an example, we’ll install the Fabric API mod. As it is a dependency for many Fabric mods you should install it too.
Mods downloaded will be in the form of a .jar file. As the server owner, for each mod you download you will need to do two things with it: Install the mod on your own computer, and install it on the server.
To install Fabric Mods on your own computer:
Navigate to your .minecraft folder. There are a few ways to do this –
- Press Windows Key + R. This will open the Run window. In the text field, type “%appdata%” and press OK
- On Mac: click on the desktop, press Command+Shift+G, type ~/Library and press enter; then open ‘Application Support’ and finally ‘minecraft’.

2. This will open a new file explorer window. From that, click on “.minecraft” which should be near the top of the list of folders.

3. Inside the .minecraft folder you will find a “mods” folder. If it does not exist, create a new folder with the name “mods” and simply drag and drop or copy the .jar file you downloaded previously into the “mods” folder.

To install Fabric Mods on the server:
You will have to place every mod and .jar file that you put in your mods folder into the Server’s mod folder as well. We go over how to connect to the server and view/modify the files in the SFTP Guide here. The instructions are basically the same however – just drop the .jar files into the mods folder and you’re good to go!
5. How to Play with Others!
Each user that plays on the server will need to install the mods on their own computer as well. To make it easier for other players and your friends, we recommend once you have all the mods you want to add them to a .zip file and distribute it to friends through Discord or other means. They’ll have to follow the installation instructions and place the .jar files into their own mods folder.
If this is not done, other players will not be able to connect to the server!

6. Important Notes and Troubleshooting
Mods can introduce bugs or occasionally strain server performance. We will be unable to provide specific support relating to most mods and conflicts.
If mod conflicts or issues do arise:
a. Ensure all mods and the Fabric version are compatible with your Minecraft version.
b. Check server logs for any error messages—they usually indicate which mod is causing issues.
c. Try adding mods one by one to isolate any problematic mods.
Running a modded Fabric server brings an entirely new dimension to Minecraft. With thousands of mods available from quality-of-life improvements to complete gameplay overhauls, there’s many options to choose from.
If you’re looking for an easy-to-manage server solution, Campfire Hosting offers a seamless experience, especially for mod enthusiasts who hop in and out of the game. You only pay for the time you play, making it cost-effective for modded Minecraft gameplay!
