Wilderness Bound landed today across both editions, as Java Edition 26.3 and Bedrock Edition 26.50. Adding features like new forest, new trees, abandoned camps to loot, and a handful of small additions like cushions and straw beds.
The feature list is the same on both sides, so everything below applies whichever edition you play.
The Dappled Forest
The main feature of the update is a new biome. Dappled Forests generates near cold biomes and are built around poplar trees, which come in red, orange, and yellow leaf variants. Each color gets its own falling leaf particle, so the biome is pretty in motion rather than just in screenshots.
Poplar saplings grow into a random one of the three variants, which means a planted forest comes out mixed rather than uniform. The wandering trader sells them if you don’t want to go find one. Poplar logs craft into a full wood set.
Two other plants generate here. Red shrubs are decorative and compostable, and bone meal spreads them into adjacent spaces. Shelf mushrooms grow on poplar trunks and fallen logs in small and large sizes, with bone meal upgrading small to large. They work like any other mushroom for stew, and they’re slightly bouncy when you step on them, complete with a bouncing sound.
Passive mobs spawn here as their cold variants, so expect cold-biome sheep, chickens, cows, pigs, rabbits, and foxes.
Abandoned Camps
Abandoned Camps are the new structure, and they’re diverse with where they generate. Eighteen biomes get them, including meadows, cherry groves, several forest types, taigas, jungles, swamps, savannas, wooded badlands, and the pale garden. Each biome gets its own visual variant of the camp, with some shared pieces across all of them.
They come with chests and barrels holding loot, which makes them a reasonable early-game target rather than pure decoration.
Explorer Maps
Explorer maps used to be renamed filled maps. Now each one is its own item with its own icon, covering sixteen types from ocean monuments and woodland mansions through buried treasure, ancient cities, mineshafts, and the new abandoned camps.
Abandoned Camps themselves hand out new explorer maps pointing to more camps in other biomes, plus maps for Ancient Cities, Trial Chambers, Mineshafts, Desert Pyramids, Jungle Pyramids, Warm Ocean Ruins, and Woodland Mansions. That turns camps into a genuine exploration hub.
Existing maps in old worlds convert automatically on load. One tradeoff worth knowing is that explorer maps and buried treasure maps can no longer be zoomed out, which they previously could.
Camps aren’t the only source either. Cartographer villagers still trade explorer maps, and those trades now hand over the new dedicated map items rather than renamed filled maps. If you’d rather buy your way to a woodland mansion than stumble across a camp, that is still a way to get them.
Small Additions
Cushions are placeable seats in all sixteen dye colors, crafted from three wool slabs. You interact with one to sit on it. They have no collision, so they can overlap with other objects, and they sit on top of whatever surface supports them rather than snapping to the grid vertically.
Straw beds let you sleep through the night without setting your spawn point. They’re single use and break after one sleep, and three hay bales gives you four of them. They won’t work in the Nether or the End, and trying will destroy the bed. Useful for expeditions where you don’t want to lose your home spawn.
Building Blocks
Every colored wool block now has stair and slab variants, and so does every concrete block. Concrete stairs and slabs can be cut at a stonecutter.
The wool ones are more interesting than they look. Wool stairs and slabs dampen vibrations the same way full wool blocks do, which opens up some tidier options for hiding sculk-sensitive machinery without building everything out of flat blocks.
Updating your Server
If you run vanilla, you can update it now. New biome, new structure across eighteen existing biomes, and real performance work on chunk generation.
If you run plugins or mods, wait. Server software and mod authors need time to catch up with a release this technically dense, and the removed log lines alone will break some tooling.
Whichever camp you’re in, back up your world before you update, and remember the whitelist. Our servers help you create a backup, so you can roll back from the Backups tab if something goes sideways.
